We are using the village phonebox and Facebook page to tell the Nativity story
Mary was sitting quietly at home in Nazareth, when she had a visitor, an angel! She was very shaken. The angel said, “Mary, do not be afraid, I bring good news. You are to bear God’s son and to call him Jesus. He will be King and his reign will never end. Mary answered, “I am the servant of the Lord, let it be as you say.”
In another country were wise men who studied the stars. They saw a new star in the sky which their studies told them foretold the birth of a new king in Judaea who would save the world.
So they set out on a journey there to find him.
The night Jesus was born all the angels in heaven rejoiced and sang. Some shepherds were looking after their sheep on a hillside nearby. They saw the angels and were astounded. The angels told them.“Don’t be frightened. A wonderful thing happened tonight, the Son of God was born in a stable in Bethlehem. If you go there you will find him with his mother.” They ran to Bethlehem and the song of the angels rang out ‘Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will towards all people.
Mary told her husband to be Joseph about the visit. He was very confused and had a lot of thinking to do. But he loved and trusted Mary and God so soon they were married.
Then the Roman emperor announced a census. Everyone in the empire must visit their family home to be registered. Mary and Joseph will have to go all the way to Bethlehem for the census. It’s going to be a long and difficult journey, especially as Mary’s baby is due very soon.
Mary and Joseph made it to Bethlehem. Many others had already arrived and the inn was full, but the kind innkeeper allowed the young couple to sleep in his stable.
That night Mary’s baby was born. She wrapped Jesus warmly and put him to sleep in the manger, resting on the soft hay.
The three wise men arrived in Judaea at the palace of the king who was called Herod. But he knew nothing about the birth of new king. So they journeyed on, following the star. It led them to Bethlehem where it shone brightly over the stable where Jesus lay sleeping.
The wise men paid homage to the new king and presented Jesus with their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
A Christmas Prayer
