We are using the village phonebox and Facebook page to tell the Nativity story
Mary was sitting quietly at home in Nazareth, when she had a visitor, an angel! She was very shaken. The angel said, “Mary, do not be afraid, I bring good news. You are to bear God’s son and to call him Jesus. He will be King and his reign will never end. Mary answered, “I am the servant of the Lord, let it be as you say.”
Mary told her husband to be about the angel’s visit. He was very confused and had a lot of thinking to do. But he loved and trusted Mary and God so soon they were married.
Oh no! Caesar, the Roman emperor, has announced a census to make sure everyone pays their taxes. Everyone in the empire must visit their family home to be registered. Mary and Joseph will have to go all the way to Bethlehem for the census. It’s going to be a long and difficult journey, especially as Mary’s baby is due very soon.
Mary and Joseph have made it to Bethlehem. What a journey! Unfortunately many others had already arrived and the inn was full. The kind innkeeper allowed the young couple to sleep in his stable. Just as well as Mary’s baby is due any day now…..
Meanwhile three Kings from the East have set out to follow follow a star which foretells the birth of a king who will save the world. It’s going to be a long, hard journey.
Good news! Mary’s baby has been born and she named him Jesus. She wrapped him warmly and put him to sleep in the manger. Later on a group of shepherds arrived at the stable. They had been watching their sheep on the hillside when angels appeared in the sky singing. The shepherds were terrified, but the angels said “Don’t be afraid. A wonderful thing happened tonight, the Son of God was born in a stable in Bethlehem. Go there quickly and find him.”
The three kings followed the bright star all the way to Bethlehem. In a lowly stable they found Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus. They presented their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the newborn King.
Afterwards, the shepherds return to their flocks and the Kings started on their long journey home. An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, warning him that King Herod wanted to harm Jesus. So Mary and Joseph set off for Egypt.
